Solid Wood Box
Learn to build an elegant solid wood box using mitre-joint technique: a day in the workshop where you'll learn the foundations of fine woodworking and end up with a one-of-a-kind piece in your hands.
A solid wood box built with your own two hands.
Over the day you'll build a solid wood box of roughly 30 × 20 cm and 10 cm tall, using the mitre-joint technique — the same foundation used for cabinets and drawers. You'll work with professional tools like the thicknesser, panel saw, router and belt sander, always guided by experts. No previous experience needed: you'll leave the workshop with the finished box and with techniques you can apply to plenty of future projects.

How you're going to do it.
This is how you'll progress across the three afternoons, from rough timber to the finished box.
You'll use the jointer and the thicknesser to get flat faces and the exact thickness your box needs.
With the mitre saw and panel saw you'll cut the sides at 45° — the foundation of the mitre-joint technique.
The router lets you create the grooves and rebates needed for the pieces to fit together precisely.
You'll join the pieces with glue and clamps, checking that the box comes out perfectly square.
The belt sander and hand sanding will leave every surface smooth and ready for the finish.
You'll apply the finish that protects the wood and brings out its grain, leaving the box ready to use or give away.
