Kumiko Workshop

Learn the foundations of Kumiko, the Japanese technique of joinery without nails or screws, where every piece fits with absolute precision to create unique decorative patterns.

Your project

A Kumiko pattern built piece by piece.

You'll work a classic Kumiko design from scratch: measuring, cutting and assembling each piece with the precision this centuries-old technique demands. Guided by a specialist guest teacher, you'll discover how geometry and patience come together into a functional object of impeccable beauty. Here the tolerance is minimal and every millimetre counts.

Kumiko Workshop — the finished piece
Step by step

How you'll do it.

From its origins to the finished piece, here's how the course unfolds:

01
History and philosophy

You'll learn about the origins of Kumiko, its link to Japanese culture and why this technique is considered almost a meditation in wood.

02
Geometry and tools

We explore the geometric principles that shape the patterns and give you a hands-on introduction to the traditional tools you'll need.

03
Building the pattern

You measure, cut and assemble each piece of a classic Kumiko design, understanding the meaning of every shape you're creating.

04
Calibration and fine tuning

You learn to correct imperfections and adjust your pieces without damaging the structure; here every millimetre counts and the tolerance is minimal.

05
Finishing and presentation

We apply traditional methods to smooth, protect and enhance the wood, giving your piece the finish it deserves.
