«Strandad» Lamp — Made de Madera
Guided project · Level 2 of 5 · Madrid

«Strandad» Lamp

Three curved legs in solid kotibe, template-routed and finished with oil. The shade comes from Ikea's Strandad; everything else, you make yourself.

Your project

From Ikea lamp to designer piece.

The complete wooden structure of a floor lamp: three legs, each with a base piece, a central batten and an upper piece, joined with dominoes and two beech triangles. From the Strandad you keep the metal legs, the frame and the shade; the wood you make yourself from start to finish, and every piece comes out of a single kotibe board.

«Strandad» Lamp — the finished piece
Step by step

How you'll make it.

Seven stages, from a single kotibe board to the lamp glowing in your home. The three legs are machined together so they come out identical.

01
Cutting list and initial cuts

You mark out the cutting list with 20 mm of extra allowance, cut on the sliding table saw and dress the wood on the jointer and thicknesser down to the final 40 mm.

02
The base pieces

An MDF template, a jigsaw to rough out and a bearing-guided router to nail the curve. Double-sided-tape lamination lets you work all three legs at once.

03
Drilling for the metal legs

On the pillar drill, with the piece held down with clamps, you drill the housings for the lamp's metal legs to a depth of 50 mm.

04
The upper pieces

You repeat template, jigsaw and router; mark the dominoes with a square and make the diagonal joining cuts with a handsaw — by hand, and without rushing.

05
The central batten

From the rest of the board you cut three battens of 825 × 40 × 40 mm, the pieces that give the lamp its height, and finish off with their domino borings.

06
Assembly

Two beech triangles join the upper and lower pieces. Dry assembly, quick-set glue piece by piece and the domino joints: glue, mallet and clamps for at least 4 hours.

07
Finishing and final assembly

A full sanding and Rubio Monocoat oil: spread it, let it work and wipe off with the grain. Fit the metal legs, put the shade on and switch it on.

Why here

What you'll learn.

Template curves

A jigsaw to rough out and a bearing-guided router to copy the exact shape — the technique behind any repeatable curved piece.

The double-tape trick

Machining all three legs at once with double-sided-tape lamination, so they come out identical without measuring three times.

Precision by hand

Diagonal cuts with a handsaw, drilling to exact depth and invisible domino joints.

Before you even ask

Before you even ask.

Do I need any previous experience?

The guide explains each machine step by step, with its safe technique for use. No machine is used without that prior training, and the Made de Madera technician is in the workshop for any questions.

Is it safe to work with the machines?

The manual marks the mandatory PPE and the warnings for each machine at every stage. Gloves are forbidden on machines with rotating parts, and you'll always work with push sticks, clamps and the guards in place.

Which part comes from Ikea and which part do I make?

From the Strandad you keep the metal legs, the frame and the shade, and skip the circular base. The entire wooden structure you build yourself from the rough board.

Is everything included in the price?

Yes: the materials (the kotibe board, the beech, the dominoes, the starting lamp and the oil), the templates, the workshop machines, the PPE and your workshop time.

How long will it take me?

Everyone goes at their own pace: you follow the guide at your speed and there's no rush to finish in one session. The wood will wait for you.

If you need any adjustments to take part comfortably, let us know when you sign up and we'll have it ready.
